How to do a safe water change

It's essential to ensure you're regularly changing the water in your freshwater tank to keep your fish healthy and maintain proper tank conditions.

Change out your tank water often by following these simple steps and ensuring your tank is a healthy home.

Prepare Your Tools and Supplies Gather the supplies you will need, which should include: a bucket, a siphon, a de-chlorinator, a separate tank for water storage, and a water testing kit.

"Whether you do a 25% %50%, or 80% water change, it actually makes no difference as the good bacteria that’s been established is based in the substrate and filtration. That helps your tank to maintain a stable environment and reduces the chance of shock to your fish."

Before replacing your tank's water, you'll want to prepare the new water you'll add.

That includes dechlorinating the water and matching the pH and hardness of the freshwater to the current tank water.

Siphon out the Water:

  • Get the siphon's hose and place it at the bottom of the tank.

  • Ensure the hose is long enough to reach down the tank and still sip on the water straight into the bucket.

  • Ensure you get the dirt and sediment at the bottom and the water.

  • Treat the Freshwater Tank Once you have the water out of the tank. Make sure to adjust your temperature accordingly.

Maintaining a clean and healthy freshwater tank is key for keeping your fish strong and vibrant. Doing so can help remove toxins, replenish your tank with fresh oxygen, and balance pH and other water parameters.
